Scope:

The Hickson Rd Upgrade is built on land that was identified to have levels of contamination that would be dangerous to the public when the ground is disturbed. As a result works are conducted in “the red zone”, a fully enclosed site where workers wear protective clothing and breathing apparatus at all times.

The added difficulties in operating equipment including excavators and survey equipment inside protective suit and breathing apparatus is testament to the skills sets and tenacity of our surveyors, utility locators and operators.

Complexity

Program—Maintaining a demanding schedule was of utmost importance to Ausgrid. Each civil works package required a tailored approach, specific to scope and project deliverables. Local environment, community stakeholder involvement and impact on businesses were major considerations that impacted each phase of the work. Calling on our experience delivering similar work in highly concentrated urban and CBD locations, Vaughan Civil devised a plan based on our self-perform methodology, that allows our project managers to accurately undertake schedule and staging management processes that drive successful outcomes for all stakeholders. These work packages were all delivered on-schedule and with minimal community impact.

Traffic management and staging—As principal contractor, Vaughan Civil engages all subcontractors, including our traffic control partners. The through-flow of vehicle and pedestrian traffic in such densely populated areas required constant and coordinated management to allow the unimpeded progress of work, compliance with road authority regulations and minimal community impact. Our team achieved strong results in balancing these requirements and keeping up the pace of a demanding delivery schedule in some of the most congested roads in NSW.

Minimising impact to the community —Conducting large-scale infrastructure work in the centre of Australia’s largest city presented an enormous challenge in minimising impacts on the local and transient (worker) community, and local businesses. Vaughan Civil worked collaboratively with local stakeholders to implement effective noise and vibration mitigation strategies, provide regular high-noise respite periods commensurate with population density, instal extra pedestrian access and crossings, conduct efficient dust control processes and develop initiatives for supporting local businesses.
